Savage Love: Exploring submissive relationships and not getting any

I have been reading your column for years, Dan, and now I’m writing you for the first time to ask for a favor. I met this dude online in December and I felt like we had a good connection. He “dumped” me, though, because he was busy and was going through career shit and lived halfway across the country from me. I think a dude telling you he’s too busy for you is bullshit — because boobs — so I encouraged him to tell me the truth. He insisted he wasn’t shining me on: Busyness and career shit and distance were the truth, he said. Now it turns out that I will shortly be moving within easy dating distance of this dude.

More and more people seek their heart’s desire online, and online dating offers pluses. You can introduce yourself to many thousands of like-minded folks without actually having to talk to them or find a graceful way to explain that you have to wash your hair that night. And there are minuses. Like, which of the nine zillion sites do you go to? How do you fill up that all-important profile? Do you send a picture and what kind? And almost makes you kind of nostalgic for the hours spent trying to decode newspaper personals.

Later on in the program, Jon Bon Jovi joins us to take your calls about his new album. You can e-mail your questions now. The address is talk npr. But first, call us with your questions about online dating and if you use online dating sites, which ones, why and did it work?

As lonely hearts increasingly turn to the Internet to find love, online dating sites have evolved beyond the format of newspaper personal ads.

I’m a guy, 35, and a cheating piece of shit. I’m engaged to a woman I love, but earlier this year I cheated on her. I have no excuse. She discovered the dating app I used, and we worked through that. But she doesn’t know that shortly after her discovery, I went ahead and cheated. To my meager, meager credit, I did seek out only women who were looking for NSA hookups.

I’m inclined to agree but, dear God, the guilt. What do I do?

We here at OkCupid have an ongoing love affair with Dan Savage, the well-known voice behind Savage Love whose resume includes author, journalist, and — most importantly — activist for the LGBTQ community. Many of us are listeners of his podcasts, and his sometimes polarizing advice is the catalyst behind some lively lunch table discussions. So when I had the opportunity to interview Savage, I was extremely excited — and a bit nervous. During what turned into more of a conversation, we discussed everything from sex, to dating, to the intrawebs, to Pride.

Here are the highlights:. Bernadette Libonate: To warm up, I would love to hear an anecdote from your worst date.

Social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic certainly isn’t making dating any easier. Here’s an expert perspective on how to find romance amid pandemic pandemonium. As a matchmaker and dating coach, I trade in people getting close — but with the COVID pandemic sweeping the globe, now may not be the best time for that. Still, short of everyone collectively shrugging and foregoing any new forms of romantic connection, dating is going to continue. Since a lot of us are dealing with our feelings of impending doom through humour, there have been some truly excellent takes about dating in these trying times.

Now, write me a poem. A number of dating apps have posted warnings in light of COVID reminding people about social distancing — but as things have progressed, even that feels inappropriate now in Toronto. Bars, restaurants, and cafes have closed to sit-in diners, but people are still finding ways to meet up. As luck would have it, video is the future of dating!

Several online dating platforms are rolling out video chat as an option. Some services are already focused on video, including recently launched online speed dating company FirstDate. If you do the video call right, it can feel like an in-person date. You can even share a meal together. What about sexy time?

We’re “open” in the sense that he wants the option to be intimate with someone else if a connection happens and in turn he said he would be supportive of me being involved in my kinks. But I haven’t done anything yet out of fear. I’m not afraid of my kinks. I’m worried that if I ask to go do something kinky it will ruin our relationship. I don’t think he was bluffing when he said it was OK for me to explore my kinks with other guys, but it worries me.

Plus, Dan Savage calls upon board-certified urologist Dr. Ashley Winter for a discussion on all blood-in-spunk-related matters. I have been to several urologists, and they say I have no medical issues. This is embarrassing, especially since oral sex—giving and receiving—has always been my favorite. If I were bleeding out of any other orifice, there would be a team of doctors helping me. Is there really no hope? But that said, sometimes a guy with a large prostate will bleed with orgasm.

For everyone out there panicking because they saw blood in their semen one time a decade ago, Dr. Winter recommends a visit to a doc for a short consultation and a quick physical exam. If those tests were not revealing, I would consider doing an ultrasound or MRI of the prostate and surrounding organs, as well as putting a camera up the urethra called cystoscopy to check out the plumbing. In males, the urethra pulls double duty, men also ejaculate through it and some women do, too! An enlarged prostate squeezes the urethra, which can make urination difficult and uncomfortable, and can also result in—you guessed it—blood in the semen.

Winter so vividly put it. A doctor shoves something called a resectoscope up your urethra and slices away chunks of prostate tissue.
